Why the Sanyo ECJ-PX50S makes a great household cooker.
We don’t always come across a model that, even though we don’t need it, are still tempted to buy it and give it a hands on test for a more accurate review (even right now as we write this page).
But the current feedback we gathered from other owners seems to be honest and most helpful and makes this rice cooker really seem worth it, and it’s no doubt that this 5 cup pressure rice cooker really caught our attention during the research process.
With this unit folks can do more than just cook rice. We love the stylish design and the fact that it has multiple settings for different rice types which are white rice, brown rice, sprouted brown, mixed, sushi, and sweet rice.
About The Sanyo ECJ-PX50S VPC Technology
Explaining more on the diverse rice settings, this unit utilizes VPC, which stands for “Variable Pressure Cooking”. What that does is rapidly move the rice using pressure cooking while simultaneously distributing even heat thanks to its titanium well insulated non-stick bowl. The outcome is rice with more aroma, flavor, and texture.
The rice cooker also uses internal monitoring technology that “pays attention” on how the rice is cooking making subtle adjusts in temperature and cooking time which will always result in a perfected bowl of rice every time.
Another neat little thing we liked about this cooker is when cooking white rice, folks also have the option to select 3 different textures; regular, soft, or firm. Just like the ECJ-HC55S and 100s models.
More Than Just Rice
Other plus benefits the Sanyo ECJ-PX50S offers folks over basic rice cookers is that it is not limited to just rice! This model can cook or warm soup, steam vegetables, cook soft or hard boiled eggs, prepare oatmeal and porridge, cook stews, and other slow or pressure cooked meals.
The Sanyo’s easy to use interface accomplishes this all with the press of a few buttons…there is no guess work involved. It may seem complicated at first glance, but scrolling through the on board menu is pretty straightforward and easy.
Just keep in mind that the bowl size of the Sanyo ECJ-PX50S is only good for feeding 2 people when cooking stews, but for rice can accommodate between 4 to 5 people (around 15 cups cooked white rice).

- slow cooker setting limited to only 8 hours
- some reported a slight plastic taste in food for first few uses (to avoid rinse thoroughly)
- noticeable “popping” sound when pressure-cooking rice (reported as sometimes)
Where to Buy a Sanyo Rice Cooker
If it weren’t for those few cons, this would have probably been the perfect all around rice cooking machine! But not every appliance is perfect, and the fact is, we have seen worse feedback concerning other brands & models than the above.
For it’s medium range price (at time of review), the Sanyo ECJ-PX50S is worth the investment. However, for folks who wish to have a unit with a longer slow cooking time, may we suggest researching the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S model with its 12 hour setting. Keep in mind the VPC benefit is not available on this unit but does offer similar features.
Overall, a recommended product from Sanyo that should have some Zojirushi models begging for mercy!
Tip: keep unit plugged in to prolong the internal battery life…please note the unit will still continue to perform properly without it as it just runs the clock when the unit is unplugged. Life of battery is approx. 4 years.
