Full review:

Cook decent white and brown rice and also steam veggies with the Black and Decker RC866 rice cooker. This is yet another simple to use single switch basic rice cooker by Black and Decker that can prepare up to 30 cups cooked rice in around the same time it will take a normal stove pot.

The attractive stainless steel look will fit the decor of most kitchens, but like the Cuisinart models is not all that smudge resistant. So be sure to give it a rub down every now and then to maintain the shiny appearance.

Although it offers great rice capacity for the price, its performance and lifespan are somewhat questionable as one user reported that he had 2 models fail on him within the first week of use…another customer who said that it died in their first year.

But perhaps this was just a bad batch of cookers that came of the manufacturing line?

Either way, we hate to give something a good rating if, overall, we hear mediocre feedback about it. Especially units dying! Granted, it has its plus sides since it is a bargain for a 10 cup rice cooker and can also steam according to the product description.

With the Black and Decker RC866 rice cooker, just measure, plug, press, and set. The unit uses a rapid-boil style when cooking and switches into a keep warm mode once complete. A great size for large households.

Pros

  • non-stick pan
  • offers a steaming feature
  • stylish design
  • easy to operate and clean
  • good price for a 10 cup cooker

Cons

  • possible short lifespan?
  • top lid design builds pressure and tends to cause boil over issues
  • no timer or advanced settings
  • fails to hold up to better competition

TIP:To help with the boil over issue, be sure to rinse the rice well and add a little cooking oil and/or chicken seasoning to break down the starch build up.

Sure its basic, easy to use, and will cook good rice in decent time, but we’re sure folks could do better.

However, if this cooker is going to be used just on occasion for a quick bowl of rice with dinner for the family, then it is good for those types of situations.

Definitely not for daily rice eaters who enjoy preparing different rice types/varieties quite frequently.

So ask yourself what you’ll use the Black and Decker RC866 for, or if it will be a gift for someone who may appreciate it for once and a while use as well…and go from there.
