Frustrated With Under-Cooked Brown Rice?

For some people, it is hard to get the brown type of rice to the texture they desire. If you are one who finds it a challenge to get it just right while the whole family is waiting to eat, this Aroma rice steamer model will come to your rescue due to its specific settings for both white and brown rice.

While cooking, the Aroma uses “Sensor-Logic” technology (another term for “Fuzzy Logic”) which will monitor the cooking time and temperature of your rice. In other words, the rice cooker sort of “thinks” for itself and will automatically make subtle adjustments where needed.

It does more than just boil the rice, and at the time of this review it seems that this is the first model Aroma offers that utilizes micro-computerized settings, (additional models are to come).

The insulted non stick bowl ensures a nice amount of heat distribution for the rice and helps maintain rice consistency, (but only until the end of the cooking cycle it seems).

In addition, the Aroma ARC-1000 rice cooker has other settings that include quick cook, smart steam, and keep warm. Although we should state from what we researched the keep warm mode tends to kick in too late and/or at a high temperature and crusts the bottom layer of rice.

Also note that the “quick cook” setting does somewhat sacrifice overall rice quality, bumping it down to just average at best. But still enjoyable and acceptable nonetheless.

Simultaneous Steaming

Another great benefit folks should enjoy from the Aroma ARC-1000 is that they can steam vegetables, chicken, seafood, etc. while their rice is cooking. Just keep in mind that you need to monitor and time this process.

The unit also comes with an option to select a “finish time” for when running out to do other errands, or returning home from work. Included with this Aroma 10 cup rice cooker is an instruction manual, measuring cup, steaming tray, rice spatula, and non stick bowl.

Pros

  • cooks great white and brown rice
  • has a removable condensation collector | water does not drip down the sides
  • non stick bowl for easy clean up (use plastic rice paddles only)
  • convenient delay timer
  • cooks rice and steams simultaneously
  • great for large households (up to 30 cups cooked white rice)

Cons

  • long rice cook times (longer for brown rice)
  • unit dries and crusts bottom layer of rice
  • takes up too much room on small counters
  • no detachable or retractable cord for easy transport or storage

Update (1/21/10):*we have received an email complaining about the crusting issue the Aroma ARC-1000 causes. Please note that one or two more complaints will result in this unit losing its Very Good rating.

With more pros than cons, this Aroma ARC-1000 unit is worth your buy. It is not a complicated machine, and will simply do what you will need it to, all at a very reasonable price for such a large cup capacity and well-cooked rice! And even though the more expensive Fuzzy Logic cookers do a better overall job at rice quality…they lack that convenient simultaneous steaming benefit.

Please also compare it to the “Aroma ARC-940SB” 10 cup rice cooker before making a final selection.
